is a study of counterpoint that uses contrasting extra-metric pulses as the primary stage of interaction. During the course of the piece, the bass clarinet and piano establish characteristic pulses against the pulse of the time signature, and then proceed to invade each other’s respective pulse spaces. The invasions take place both as gradual processes and as combative gestures. Percussion punctuates and dramatizes these interactions while the glockenspiel, like a confused child, marks the metric pulse with a simple winding melody, oblivious to the squabbling of the other instruments.
